Outputs

4 female and 2 males each, fresh graduates and Government Education Department field staff (total 8 females
& 4 males) trained staff (total 8 females & 4 males ) trained in social organization in education through one
year internship programmed with partner organization .

Actions Taken

Six fresh graduate interns (4 females and 2 males) were selected on merit in Districts D.I. khan, Bunnu, Swat and
Dir. likewise, 4 NGOs and 6 Mentors were also identified. One year training was provided Covering 4 Stages.
Each stage was of 3 months duration, which included taught courses and filed work

Achievements

• Three female and two male interns successfully completed the training to become trained social organizers
In the field of education.
• Four partner NGOs trained in Human Resource Development.
• Four female Mentors and two male mentors Sufficiently trained to develop HRD activities with in their
Organization
• Training , Education and Development Reference Manuals were produced in Urdu. Subsequent
Achievements of the interns and Mentors in Carrying forward their training for the improvement of education
In their localities include the following examples:
• Intern: working as a Teacher Trainer at Swat public school and college for girls, junior section

• Mentor: working as a senior English teacher (SET) in Government girls, High selected by UNESCO to

to train 220 teachers in the near future, and
• Three mentors are developing a network for social mobilization for promoting Education across NWFP

Third party Evaluation (TPE)

A TPE of the interns, Scheme phase 1 was undertaken by external consultants in May 2001. the ensuing report was
Circulated by the British Council to Government and stakeholders. It recommended continuation and institutionalization
Of the interns, Scheme with certain amendments and additions.
However, owing to the previously mentioned DFID freeze not only did it prevent Government field officers from
Participating in phase1 it also prevented issuance of the Notification of the interns’ Scheme Advisory Committee
And subsequently Government did not agree to continue the Scheme into phase 2

Sustainability

The interns’ Scheme model has been adopted by the institute for Development studies and practice(IDSP) and now
From part of their regular program of courses at its national center in Quetta, Balochistan. Three interns’ and
Mentors from NWFP are placed as associate mentors and are fully involved in the organizational development
Process of the programme.

Design of the Intern’s Scheme.

Following the development and agreement with the Government and FEF of the interns’ Scheme
Concept in January 1999,A three-day workshop was held in March 1999 to prepare the detailed
Content and methodology of the Scheme the participants of the workshop included concerned
Government officers, FEF
And NGO staff A log-frame was developed which reflected the main outline of the design
As follows:
• Developing the skills, knowledge and ability of fresh graduates and Education Field Offers as interns
To become Social Organizers for education development
• Building up the skills, knowledge and ability of the Mentors as Social Organizers for education
Development and developing their skills for continuation of Human Resource Development activates in their NGOs
• Strengthening the NGOs to enable them to incorporate a regular programmed of induction for interns as a
Regular HRD activity in their organizations
• Exploring and findings ways to institutionalize the process for sustainability in NWFP.
